Tariff Pause, But Small Retail’s Still on the Edge
The stock market may be rebounding but small import-reliant retailers seem to still be stuck in survival mode.
Here’s the deal:
In May, Trump paused his 145% tariff hike after reaching a 90-day truce with China. Tariffs now sit at 30%, which is still painfully high for many Shopify sellers who import inventory.
What that means for small businesses:
Owners like Matt Kubancik (Guardian Baseball) are pulling back on new product development
Retailers selling on Amazon and Walmart are seeing margin shrink
Some are raising prices just to stay above water
Others are holding off entirely on holiday inventory until the next move in August
If you’re relying on imports, Q4 strategy needs to start now. Cushion your margin. Forecast delays. Have a backup supplier outside tariff zones if possible.
So what’s happening with new tariffs?

For now, we know that President Trump’s self-imposed July 9 tariff deadline is fast approaching with signals that he’s unlikely to extend the pause. This hints to a return to the original 145% "Liberation Day" tariffs if deals fall through. Canada scrapped its digital services tax on U.S. tech firms (Apple, Amazon, Google), prompting trade talks to restart immediately. The EU may accept a 10% universal tariff, but wants exemptions for key industries like pharmaceuticals, alcohol, semiconductors, and aircraft.
So far, the U.K. is the only country with a finalized deal, leaving small retailers bracing for potential cost spikes if the truce expires without further progress.
