Growth hack:

In last week’s edition, ChatGPT announced that its users could soon become your customers. So far it looks like the service hasn’t rolled out yet…not even to US merchants, who Shopify says they’ll start with.

But this is good. Because it means that you can can start optimizing your store before your competitors do. Even better is the fact that ChatGPT released its merchant selection criteria that reveals exactly what you need to fix to give you a good chance.

Ultimately, ChatGPT decides what products to recommend based on data, and it looks for three things:

  1. Structured product data (clean info your store feeds into AI systems)

  2. Reviews and trust signals (what real people say about your product)

  3. Consistent, clear listings (the same product info across Shopify, Google, and beyond)

So what do you need to do next to get your store picked up by ChatGPT?

  1. Turn on the right channels:

    • Apply to the program if you haven’t already done so

    • Enable Google & YouTube Channel in Shopify

    • Enable the Shop Channel (Shopify’s own discovery network)

    • Enable one-click checkout in Shopify

  2. Add JSON-LD structured data

  3. Fix your product titles

  4. Improve your product descriptions:

  5. Add and display real reviews

  6. Keep prices and stock accurate

  7. Stay consistent

  8. Build credibility

  9. Track, track, track so you know what’s working and what isn’t.

Latest: Trump’s 100% China Tariff

Last Friday, President Trump announced an impending additional 100% tariff on Chinese imports starting November 1 (or sooner)….on top of the existing ~30%.

As expected, Chinese exporters are rushing to ship existing inventory out before the deadline. Meanwhile, analysts warn that many of the costs are already being passed down the chain.

What you should expect: If you source any component, packaging, or product from China, your landed cost are about to go even higher. Shipping delays and customs friction will increase.

You’ll have to either absorb the cost or raise retail prices (and risk losing customers). Some suppliers may simply stop exporting or look for markets with fewer trade headaches.

Isn’t it ironic that right after discussing a 100% tariff, we hop off to discuss a trending product which will almost certainly be affected by said tariffs? Don’t shoot the messenger.

Anyway, mini-LEDs (tiny LEDs grouped into controllable “zones”) come with displays that are sharper, more energy efficient, and less prone to burn-in compared to OLEDs.

Their adoption is accelerating across gaming monitors, high-end laptops, and premium TVs. One brand, Omdia sold over 3m units of mini LEDs in Q4 2024 alone.

Three ways you can profit from this trend:

  1. Sell accessory bundles for mini-LED displays. Think: screen filters, cleaning kits, display cables (HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort), blue-light filters.

  2. Curate a “future-proof display” category. Position monitors, laptops, or portable displays with mini-LED panels as premium upgrades. Target creators, gamers, remote workers.

  3. Test peripheral hardware or mods with micro influencers using tools like Stack Influence. E.g. backlight diffusers, ambient lighting kits, stand upgrades tailored to mini-LED panels (or monitor arms).
