Follow along: Using Claude to automate Shopify SEO (Case study 1/3)
Our agentic workflow just isolated 1,009 specific keyword opportunities sitting right on the edge of Page 1 and turned them into 2 simple actions.
Hey Champ,
Today’s newsletter is a little different as I’d like to share something we’ve been experimenting with in our store for a few months now.. and we have gotten down to a fine art.
If you’re running a Shopify store, you already know the drill. You install an SEO app like Plug in AI, fix some alt text randomly, tweak a few meta descriptions, and hope for the best.
You may have fixed your SEO issues in order of the “most broken” in your store….not neccesarily in order of the most likely to increase your rankings based on Google Search Console data.
We wanted to stop guessing and prioritize our SEO fixes in order of the greatest impact to our rankings based on GSC data. So we deployed Claude Code directly into our store’s backend to automate our SEO strategy. We did this in a specific way (allowed “read access” only then used Plug In AI to implement…too many horror stories about Claude deleting stores. shivers)

Over the next three emails, I’m going to pull back the curtain and show you exactly how we do it, so we can all see for ourselves whether or not this works. For transparency, this is our GSC starting point. Today, we're starting with our weekly gap analysis & implementation.
But first, check this out.
Free webinar: How a skincare brand with 2 employees beat L'Oréal at trust (and how to become a top recommended brand in AI-driven commerce)
Meanwhile, most merchants still think SEO is the only discovery channel that matters. That assumption may age very badly over the next 24 months as customers keep to using AI to find + buy products.
One of the biggest signals AI systems use when recommending products isn’t reviews. It’s consistency and verifiability across the web. This is why a 2-person skincare brand is now more trusted by AI systems than billion-dollar L’Oreal.
Next week, one of the biggest discussions around this will be held live by Ankur Modi (ex-Meta, ex-Amazon systems architect)…. on how small brands can get recommended over big competitors inside AI systems like ChatGPT.
You’re invited.

Now, back to it..
Part 1: Hunting for "Gaps" (aka greatest potential)
Most SEO tools give you a massive laundry list of keywords you could rank for. It's overwhelming and mostly useless.
Instead, we connected Claude directly to the Google Search Console (GSC) API to pull actual, real-time ranking data (clicks, impressions, and exact positions). It then filtered everything down to look exclusively for our "Gap Zone" (gap zone: high-intent keywords where our store sits between positions 5 & 20 on Google.)

Why do we care about these? Because you are already on the cusp of greatness. You don't need a massive, months-long backlink campaign to rank for these. Often, one well-targeted optimization or a single highly relevant article is all it takes to shoot them straight to Page 1 and start capturing massive traffic.
How the AI Agent Handles It
I don't have to lift a finger for this anymore. Here is the exact process the Claude agent runs through every single week:
Step 1: Check Current Runtimes & Auth: The agent boots up, reads our secure credentials file (
.env), checks the system environment, and hooks into Google.Step 2: Pull & Clean the Data: It queries GSC and pulls the full top 30 keyword and URL-level data. In our latest run, it cleared out the noise and isolated 1,009 highly targeted gap zone keywords.
Step 3: Analyze against historical snapshots: The agent compares today’s data against our prior weekly snapshots (like our previous May 8 baseline) to build a Movement Report. It instantly sees what’s climbing and what's dropping.
No more generic advice
The best part? The agent doesn't give me useless platitudes like "write good content" or "optimize your headers." It analyzes the ranking URL against Page 1 competitors and outputs hyper-specific Keyword Opportunity Cards.
For every single gap zone keyword, it gives me:
Current Metrics: Direct impressions, exact position, and CTR.
A Surgical Action Recommendation: * Is there no existing page properly targeting this query? ➡️ Action: Generate a new specific article brief.
Here’s this week’s recommendation (with our keywords removed obv)

Next, we create the collection and use Plug In AI to optimize each page our SEO strategy has become a self-correcting machine.

What's Next?
Finding the gaps is only half the battle. To really crush it on Google, you have to know exactly what the stores currently occupying those top 3 spots are doing right.
In my next email, I'll show you Part 2: Competitor Analysis, and how I get the agent to reverse-engineer the exact content gaps keeping us from taking the #1 spot.
Stay tuned,
Ada
